To try to keep you from coming to my house with torches and pitchforks, I've made a couple changes which I think people will enjoy.

I fixed the chat window scrolling issue. If you have scrolled up, it won't force you down again

![]()
I tweaked the interface in to use the space more efficiently

Again, I'm sorry for messing around. As they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. |

Well, it wasn't broke...but it wasn't great. I liked the change.

you can do or try whatever you want, adam, we'll still just be grateful we have the game:-0

Still looks like the in-game progress window is displaying points change next to rating rather than word-point total for the round. Is it possible to get that back (either in place of, or in addition to the rating point delta)?

Adam, you can change, experiment etc all you want. Without u'r genius i wouldn't be making new friends & having a good time playing the game. Thank you for all your work.

Posted by adamplumb I fixed the chat window scrolling issue. If you have scrolled up, it won't force you down again. Still doesn't work for me... Also still need to address the front page active scores issue. But I like the predictive rating! Now I have to get used to seeing the word chart in a new spot. And thanks for making the score rational again. (: ~ sleepwalks |
As Hales has said so grateful for the site keeping up with our tangle buddies! Hated that change was so unfair but it is what it is, my saying. Adam many of us have a real problem freezing in the game and than taking mega pts from us very frustrating, maybe a solution for that soon?....

so it's back to how it was? meaning when playing with lower ratings (which is always the case in 30 sec room), just nearly impossible to gain points
![]() But, as others have said, am grateful for the site ![]() |
Adam,
I too, am so grateful for this site. Something I would like to ask you about though. (Mind you, it is only something for you to ponder) (You really notice this in the 30 sec room because there aren't many in there at a time) Is it feasible (or even a fair rating sytem) to have it to where the points won/lost in the game to equal zero? Ex: Player A (+4) Player b (+2) Player C (-3) Player D (-7) It just seems to be harsh for those that work really hard to see such a point loss. Again, it is just something to think about. You are great to give us this site! Thank you. |
The nature of the points algorithm appears to be that lower ratings lose more when higher ratings gain less. I forgot to pay attention whether the converse is true - whether those with lower ratings also gain more when higher ratings lose less. That's probably what leads to the phenomenon you note on a game by game basis, but I _believe_ that it all evens out in the end. I wouldn't mind seeing the situation normalized so that everything equals zero on a per-game basis, either. ~ sleepwalks

I'm okay with your changes - except for one thing. Your current game score - since you put pluses and minuses up there - no longer shows up with using Mozilla Firefox (my preferred browser by a LONG shot). So, now I have to institute IE for the sole purpose of playing this game.
|
I use Firefox here and see the plus and minuses fine. I love ALL the changes! Thank you so much!

Well, might be back where it was and I see some lower ratings complaining, but I'll complain right back. When I'm 1750 and 8 people in the room are playing and I beat the number 2 player (rating 1550)by 40 points, but still lose 4 points, just seems a touch unfair. Complain all you want but the best way to gain in this game is to play higher rated players. Perhaps I have just plateaued to where I now am, but try to imagine the frustration when you far surpass others in game near your rating and lose bunches of points each session.
|
What messes up the ratings is when new players come along and are actually quite good, but it's going to take them quite a while to get up to a ranking that accurately reflects their skill level. Some players may never get there because they'll never play enough. I feel like the starting rank should be a little higher than it is. Somewhere in the pink zone perhaps. The more popular this site becomes and the more players join up, the more this becomes an issue. I've been losing lots more points lately because of this dynamic -- usually later at night to newcomers who are actually at the same skill level as me, but are ranked much lower.

Hi Adam. I enjoyed playing in the old Tangleword 6-letter room (6 x 6). It worked well. In fact, I'd venture to say it wasn't broken. I even hoped for a 7 x 7 (7-letter minimum) board.
Why is the 6x6 room here "fixed" with a 5-letter minimum? There are other 5-letter rooms. Please increase the minimum to 6-letters - I'm still homesick. Or perhaps create a new 6-letter min. room for us diehard Six players? |
